FAQs: Record of Codec

Why does the encoder/decoder recommend a maximum recording interval of 30 minutes?

When recording long events like tennis matches, it's essential to consider the limitations of the MP4 format used by the encoder/decoder. The MP4 format requires proper finalization of its file structure to ensure data integrity. If the power is turned off unexpectedly, all unsaved data in the current recording session will be lost.

To mitigate this risk, our engineers recommend limiting the maximum single packaging time to 30 minutes. This approach offers several advantages:
  1. Data Integrity: Shorter packaging intervals ensure that any data loss caused by a power outage is confined to a smaller portion of the stream, minimizing the overall impact.
  2. Error Recovery: It allows for better recovery options, as previous 30-minute segments remain intact and unaffected by interruptions in subsequent recordings.
  3. Optimal Performance: Recording in shorter segments reduces the risk of file corruption and ensures smoother playback and editing workflows.
While you can record continuously for longer durations (e.g., 1.5 or 2 hours), adopting this practice of shorter packaging intervals is a precautionary measure to safeguard your valuable recordings.
