Can we upgrade firmware directly through UI?

Upgrading firmware directly through the user interface (UI) of an codec is generally NOT RECOMMENDED, due to the potential risks associated with the process. Firmware upgrades can significantly impact the functionality and stability of the device, and improper execution of the upgrade can lead to device instability, malfunctions, or even permanent damage.

Instead, firmware upgrades are typically recommended to be performed using a Device Manager provided by the EXVIST and under wired connection. For more information, please refer to Upgrade Firmware.

Given the potential implications of firmware upgrades, it's important to carefully follow the manufacturer's guidelines and recommendations when performing this process. If unsure about the correct procedure for upgrading firmware on a particular codec, it's advisable to reach out to the manufacturer's support team for guidance.

WARNING: DO NOT upgrade the firmware from web interface directly and under wireless connection.  Here's a breakdown of the two reasons mentioned for not upgrading the firmware directly from the web interface and under a wireless connection, as well as the recommendation to use a device manager for the upgrade:
  1. Risk of Hardware Damage: Upgrading firmware directly through the graphical user interface (GUI) of the device might pose a risk of causing damage to the device, specifically the encoder unit in this case. If the upgrade process is interrupted or fails, it could potentially render the unit inoperable, requiring it to be sent back to the manufacturer EXVIST for repair and burning flash. Upgrading through a more controlled and specialized method, such as a device manager, can reduce this risk.
  2. Recovery Options: The device manager likely provides a more robust and controlled environment for firmware upgrades. If a firmware upgrade through the device manager fails or causes the unit to become non-functional, there may be additional recovery options available through the same or specified device manager interface. This could potentially mitigate the consequences of a failed upgrade and provide a pathway to restore the encoder's functionality.

Why is it not possible to locate the codec in the device manager after upgrading?

If an codec fails to be discovered by the device manager after upgrading and only one power indicator is lit, it could indicate a potential hardware or firmware issue. Before returning the codec to the factory for repair or flashed again, there are a few troubleshooting steps that can be attempted:
  1. Check Connections: Ensure that all connections, including power and network cables, are properly connected.
  2. Reboot: Try turning off the codec, disconnecting it from power, and then reconnecting it and powering it back on.
  3. Reset: Try to press the Reset button for more than 5 seconds. This could help in resetting the codec to its default settings.
  4. Firmware Update: If possible, attempt to update the firmware using the appropriate method recommended by the EXVIST. Please refer to next question.

How should we attempt to update the firmware again if we're experiencing the issue of failure of upgrading?

  1. Power on the codec and connect this codec to your PC via LAN cable directly without going through router or switch;
  2. Run Device Manager if you already installed the latest version;
  3. Go to Configuration->Change HTTP Port from 80 to 6868;
  4. Click Manual Add->Select the device you just manually added;
  5. Browse the Latest & correct firmware->Enter User Name and Password->Click "Upgrade"
  6. The device will be reboot and you can try to search the device later;
  7. If failed to upgrade, please try to connect it to your PC with ethernet cable and try again;

WARNING: Please DO NOT CHANGE the default IP 192.168.1.64 on the device manager. If the previous attempt was unsuccessful, please try upgrading again, as this is the only method to restore it.
